What synastry actually is, and why sun signs cannot do it

Twelve signs by twelve signs is one hundred and forty-four combinations. That is the entire universe of the compatibility charts that circulate online: one hundred and forty-four boxes, into which every relationship that has ever existed is meant to fit.

Fire goes with fire. Scorpio and Leo, catastrophe. Two Geminis, chaos but fun. You have read the grid. You may even have made a decision because of it. No astrologer worth the name has ever worked that way.

The Sun is not the part of you that dates

Your sun sign describes identity and direction, the story you are consciously authoring about yourself. It is genuinely useful. It is also close to irrelevant to how two people get on across an ordinary Tuesday.

The placements that actually run a relationship are the ones nobody asks about at parties. Venus, which is what you find beautiful and how you show affection. Mars, which is what you want and how you fight for it. The Moon, which is what you need in order to feel safe. Mercury, which is whether a conversation between you is a duet or two monologues.

Most couples are not incompatible. They are fluent in different languages and have not noticed.

What astrologers do instead

The technique is called synastry, and it predates the internet's grid by a couple of thousand years.

You take both charts, two full skies from two birth moments, and lay one over the other. Then you look at what touches what. Their Venus landing on your Moon. Your Mars squaring their Mercury. Their Saturn sitting on your Sun. Each contact is a specific, describable dynamic between two specific people, not a category.

You also look at where each person's planets fall in the other's houses, which is to say what area of life each one activates. Someone whose planets crowd your fourth house changes what home means to you. Someone stacked in your tenth changes your work. The same two people, entirely different gravity.

How to read what comes back

Three things decide how loud a contact is.

The planets involved. Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars contacts are the ones you feel daily. Two outer planets touching each other is usually a generational coincidence rather than anything about the two of you.

The angle. A conjunction fuses two drives together. An opposition puts them at either end of a see-saw, so you tend to swing. A square is friction. Trines and sextiles are ease.

And the orb, which is how close to exact the angle is. A contact within a degree is a defining feature of the relationship. One at seven degrees is background noise. This is why two people can have the same Venus and Mars contact and one couple barely notices it.

It is not a verdict, and should not be sold as one

A synastry reading cannot tell you whether to stay, whether they love you, or whether anyone is coming back. Anybody who says otherwise is selling certainty, and certainty is the oldest trick in this trade.

What it can do is name the pattern. Put language on the argument you keep having in slightly different clothes. Explain why the thing that reads as coldness is, in that person's chart, quite plainly fear. That is genuinely useful, and it is a different product from a prophecy.
