Saturn in synastry: the contact that either builds it or grinds it down
The heaviest thing two charts can do to each other, and the one most often mistaken for someone not caring. Saturn is rarely withholding. Saturn is usually afraid.

Saturn contacts between two charts have a bad reputation and half of it is earned.
Saturn is limits, time, gravity and the weight of the real. In a natal chart it is where life asks you to build something properly and will not accept a shortcut. In synastry it is where one person becomes that force for the other, usually without meaning to and often without noticing.
Saturn on the Moon
The hardest of them, and the most common source of a specific kind of loneliness inside a relationship that looks fine from outside.
The Moon person reaches for comfort. The Saturn person, at the exact moment comfort is wanted, becomes measured, practical, or simply unavailable. Repeated across years this is genuinely wearing, and the Moon person tends to conclude they are too much, or that they are not loved.
What is usually happening is different. Saturn is not withholding. Saturn is frightened, and its response to feeling exposed is to get formal. Once the Moon person can read the closed door as fear rather than indifference, this becomes workable. Until then it is corrosive.
Saturn contacts are not about how much somebody loves you. They are about what somebody does when they are afraid.
Saturn on the Sun
The Saturn person's seriousness lands on the other person's sense of self, and whether that is a gift or a wound depends almost entirely on one distinction: whether Saturn is holding a standard or holding a judgement.
Held as a standard, this is the contact behind relationships that genuinely last. Somebody is willing to be the one who builds, who says the unglamorous thing, who does not let the other person drift. People describe partners like this as the reason they finally got somewhere.
Held as a judgement, it is a slow erosion. The Sun person feels persistently not quite enough, never dramatically, always slightly. That is a hard thing to point at and a very hard thing to live under.
Saturn on Venus
Love with a spine in it. Affection here is shown by turning up rather than by saying so, and commitment tends to come easily to this pair.
The friction version is a reaching hand meeting a hesitation. The Venus person offers, the Saturn person pauses, and the pause gets read as rejection when it is almost always self-protection. Slow to warm. Durable once it has.
Saturn contacts are worth knowing about before they have been running for three years. The calculator will show you which ones are there and how tight they are.

This is the part that confuses everyone, including the people in it.
Saturn contacts are sticky. They do not feel like fun and they are very hard to leave, because Saturn is the planet of commitment and obligation and it produces a sense that this is serious, this counts, this is not something you walk away from. That is real, and it is also exactly the feeling that keeps people in relationships that are not working.
Astrology cannot tell you which of those you are in. What it can do is stop you interpreting a Saturn partner's caution as proof that you are unlovable, which is the single most common misreading of this contact and does an enormous amount of quiet damage.
What it is asking
Saturn rewards one thing: unglamorous work, over time. The pairs who do well with heavy Saturn contacts are not the ones who fought them. They are the ones who worked out what was being asked, said it out loud, and then did the boring version of it for years.
